Print Format Guide: Which Art Print Is Right for You?

One painting can live on a wall six different ways. Paper, a frame, canvas, acrylic, metal, or wood. Each one changes how the light sits on the art.

Here is what each looks like, how it handles glare, how it hangs, and how to care for it. To see the difference with your own eyes, compare the Seashore Symphony art print with the Seashore Symphony acrylic print.

Art Print (Paper)

Look. Fine art paper in a matte or satin finish. Colors stay natural and soft. A good choice when texture and tone matter.

Light and glare. Matte takes in the light and shows almost no glare, so it suits bright rooms. Satin has a gentle sheen.

Weight and hanging. Light and easy to hang. It arrives rolled or flat, ready for a frame of your choosing.

Care. Keep it out of direct sun and damp air. Do not touch the printed surface. Dust with a soft, dry cloth.

How long it lasts. Framed and out of direct sun, a good paper print lasts for many years. Unframed, it is more easily marked by moisture and handling.

Framed Print

Look. A paper print already set in a frame, in classic or modern styles. It arrives finished, with nothing left to do but hang it.

Light and glare. Clear glazing can reflect bright light. Anti-glare glazing, where offered, cuts most of it.

Weight and hanging. Heavier than paper alone. Hanging hardware comes attached. For the larger sizes, check that your wall anchor can hold the weight.

Care. Wipe the frame with a dry or barely damp cloth. Clean the glass with a non-ammonia cleaner sprayed on the cloth, not on the frame. Keep it out of steamy rooms like bathrooms.

How long it lasts. The frame keeps dust and fingers off the print. It holds up well in a steady room, away from sun and damp.

Canvas Print

Look. Printed on artist canvas and wrapped around a wooden frame. It has a warm, painted feel that suits beach scenes. It hangs as is, with no frame needed.

Light and glare. The woven surface spreads the light, so glare stays low even under spotlights.

Weight and hanging. Medium weight. It hangs from a nail or hook on the back of the frame. Larger sizes sit steadier on two hooks.

Care. Dust with a soft, dry brush or cloth. Keep it away from water and sprays. A small mark can sometimes be dabbed off with a barely damp cloth.

How long it lasts. Canvas needs no glass. Fade-resistant inks help hold the color. Very humid air can make it sag over time.

Acrylic Print

Look. The image is printed on the back of clear acrylic, so the color looks deep and lit from within. A modern look for bold color and fine detail. See the Seashore Symphony acrylic print.

Light and glare. The glossy face makes colors glow, and it also reflects light. Hang it where light comes from the front or the sides.

Weight and hanging. Heavier than paper or canvas. It usually mounts on small metal standoffs that hold it just off the wall, so it seems to float. Large sizes are easier with two people.

Care. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and an acrylic-safe cleaner. Skip ammonia, alcohol, and paper towels, which can cloud or scratch the face.

How long it lasts. Acrylic does not shatter like glass, and it protects the colors behind it. Scratches on the face are hard to remove, so handle it gently while hanging.

Metal Print

Look. The image is fused onto aluminum. Clean and modern, with bright, saturated color. Highlights take on a soft shine.

Light and glare. A glossy finish can reflect light at some angles. A matte or satin finish, where offered, keeps the color and cuts the glare.

Weight and hanging. Light for its size. It hangs flat to the wall on a cleat or standoffs, and it is easy to level.

Care. Wipe with a soft, damp cloth. No scouring pads or harsh cleaners. It handles moisture well, so it can go in a kitchen.

How long it lasts. Metal resists scratches and water and holds its color well. No glass or frame needed.

Wood Print

Look. Printed straight onto a natural wood panel. The grain shows through the lighter parts of the image, which gives it a warm, handmade feel. It suits landscapes and nature scenes. Very dark or very detailed images look softer on wood.

Light and glare. The wood is matte, so glare stays low in most light.

Weight and hanging. Medium weight, with hanging hardware on the back. For the larger sizes, check your wall anchor.

Care. Keep it out of long direct sun and damp air. Wipe with a dry or barely damp cloth. No sprays or chemical cleaners.

How long it lasts. Sturdy, but wood feels changes in humidity and temperature more than metal or acrylic does. It is happiest indoors in a steady room.
